This psalm reminds us that Christians experience a fullness of joy because of our experience of the presence of God. It’s easy to see how the physical presence of loved ones can have an enormous influence on our state of mind. Some of my most precious memories are of being reunited with my family after a long separation. Being back in their presence certainly brought me a fullness of joy. In the same way, an awareness of God’s presence in our lives is indispensable to our experience of joy. What is important about someone’s presence? Usually it involves touch, warmth, and talking with them. Normally these are physical experiences, but with God they are spiritual experiences. That does not make them less real, because we are just as much spiritual beings as we are physical. The presence of God is a spiritual reality for the child of God, because He seals us with His Holy Spirit when He saves us and makes us new. God’s presence may be a spiritual reality … but, it is a REALITY. Let me encourage you to seek the fullness of joy that comes from dwelling in the presence of God.
